A Silly Thanksgiving Ditty

Thought for the day:  An optimist is a person who starts a new diet on Thanksgiving day.  Irv Kupcine

I'm optimistic, but I'm not stupid, so I won't even pretend to count calories on Thanksgiving. At best, maybe I'll exercise a little discretion and only eat one piece of pie. And skip the whipped cream. (I know. Such phenomenal control.)

Some years ago, when one of our kids was in middle school, I wrote a silly poem for one of the bulletin boards I'd been asked to design for the school's hallway. The senior Bush was president at that time, but with a quick presto change-o to that part of the poem, I'm gonna go with it here for an easy lazy extremely thoughtful post for your enjoyment.

And so, without further ado, I give you ...

                                                                Turkey Blues

There once was a turkey named Jake,
Said, "How much must we poor turkeys take?
                                                When Thanksgiving rolls round,
                                                We must go underground;
Why can't all those people eat STEAK?"

Now, turkeys may not be so pretty,
Can't fly, and aren't very witty,
But with a leader like Jake,
                                                   A chance they might take,
So a bunch of them left for the city.

Jake led a big march on D.C.
(The IN place for protests, you see)
                                                  "We don't want any fights.
But we, too, should have rights,
For this is the land of the free!"

Obama came out on the green
With the most turkeys I've ever seen,
Said, "The issue is not at all murky ...
                                                   Rights are for MAN and not TURKEY;
That's the way that it always has been."

Thanksgiving is special in the U.S. of A.
And turkeys are heroes, I'd like to say.
So thank the next turkey you meet on the street
For being so terribly tasty to eat
And have a great Thanksgiving Day!

                                                             ***************

Thanksgiving dinners take eighteen hours to prepare. They are consumed in twelve minutes. Half-times take twelve minutes. This is not coincidence.      Erma Bombeck

Dunno if I'll be back to post on Friday or not. (Might still be deep in the throes of digestion.) At any rate, until next time, take care of yourselves. And each other.

I YAM wishing you all  a blessed Thanksgiving.

  5. Great ditty! Very funny - it has inspired me to write one to make my kids laugh. Afraid I don't have your talent tho'. heehee

I hope you have a lovely Thanksgiving with lots of family, friends, great smiles and yummy food - including turkey.

  6. Poor turkeys. Well, I don't feel that sorry for them. I'm not ready to occupy the Washington Mall on their behalf anyway. :)

    Have a great Thanksgiving. :)

  8. Thank you all for your comments.

    Beach Bum- Right back atcha.

Dianne- For me, the best thing about turkey is how wonderful it smells while it's cooking. When our son would come home from Chicago for Thanksgiving weekend, he always requested a pan of lasagna, so we'd have both turkey and lasagna. (And natch, kielbasa and sauerkraut.)

Austan- Happy Thanksgiving to you, too, kiddo. And thanks for helping keep me up on some of the blood pressure-raising current events. (My pressure tends to runs low ...)

Delores- I'm glad you weren't born a turkey, too. (I ask you: would a TURKEY write an awesome blog or send me candy??) A very happy Thanksgiving to you and your family.

Skippy- Glad to see(?) your giggle again. If you write a ditty, I know it'll be super. You could draw a really cool cartoon to go with it. I hope you and the family have a super Thanksgiving.

L.G.- I don't want to be the one who has to kill the turkey, but I don't feel sorry for them, either. I'm a card-carrying member of PETA. (People Eating Tasty Animals) Happy T'giving to you, too.

Linda- Glad you liked it. You and your family have a wonderful Thanksgiving, too.

  9. Glad to see the Yam got honorable mention for this holiday season too. I'm sure the entire school must've highly enjoyed that poem. I'll bet when you wrote it you never dreamed you'd one day post it on this magical internet thingy!

    Have a great day.

  11. Hi, Nicki. You've got that right. My first experience with a computer barely resembled what a computer is these days, and the internet wasn't even a concept yet. Thank you for stopping by, dear lady. (And again, that was a great interview you did with Anne.)

Sarah- Glad to make you smile, and glad you're not a turkey, too.

  13. Susan, that was wonderful.

I have been busy all day (have gone past my allotted 18 hours because I have 15 people for dinner tomorrow), and am sitting down now to read my most favorite bloggers.

What am I most grateful for: You Susan. It has been a most difficult of transitions with my retirement this year. I go from super-charged, to out of batteries. However, two times a week I listen to and talk to a most intelligent, funny lady who lifts my spirits and makes me feel good.

Have a happy holiday. When you read this I will most probably be serving food or washing dishes. I am forever, the hostess with the mostest.

  15. Hi Susan .. I'm asking Rosalind Adam to post this for me - as I can't comment on your blog .. using the embedded comment box - it doesn't give me the options I need to comment - I can't contact you via email as you don't post one ... could you email me please hilarymeltonbutcher@gmail.com thanks so much!

Re your Turkey - poor chap his sign with Eat Steak sounds a good idea doesn't it .. Turkeys are in for a rum deal at the moment ... the problem is they can't really come up til January ... and then it's only a couple of months before Easter thoughts for Turkey start again ..

Hope you and your family had a happy time - eating your desired fodder ... Happy Thanksgiving - cheers Hilary

  16. Hi, that last one was from Hilary and this is from me. I hope you had a great Thanksgiving Day. Turkeys need have no fears from me. I really don't like the taste. Now chickens on the other hand...

  17. Hi, Carrie. Y'know, come to think of it, Obama had to deal with a bunch of turkeys EVERY day, doesn't he??? I hope you had a super day, and we spent a LOT more than twelve minutes stuffing our faces!

Arleen. Aw, crap. You brought tears to my eyes. I feel the same way, dear lady. I never dreamed it was possible to care so much about people I've never met face-to-face, but it is. And you're one of them. I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving. We spent the day in the mountains with all our daughter's in-laws, and it was great. (I still have to roast our "home" turkey, yet ... y'know, we gotta have those "left-overs!") Not gonna write a post or visit other blogs today ... I'm thinking about going to the store to fight the hordes and take advantage of a really super Black Friday deal... if the item hasn't already sold old. (And you thought I was "intelligent!")

Tracy- Oh, I DID go for the whipped cream, and TWO desserts. (urp) I hope you had a wonderful day.

Hilary- I'm sorry you're still having a problem trying to post a comment here. (And humbled that you go to the trouble to comment through other people!) We had a lovely Thanksgiving, and did damage not only to a turkey, but to a ham, as well. (And I absolutely REFUSE to step on a scale. Besides, those things LIE!) I'd be happy to send you an email.

Rosalind- Thank you for posting for Hilary. I really appreciate it. And yes, ma'am, we had a lovely Thanksgiving. (I actually prefer chicken, too ... no "gassy" side effects.)

    Take care, y'all.
