For Faithful Friends, Part III

Thought for the day:  There is no psychiatrist in the world like a puppy licking your face. [Ben Williams]

In the mid '70s, we adopted a pair of impish sibling cockapoos. Oliver thought he was my baby. Really. Spoiled rotten. (I had absolutely nothing to do with it.) Cocoa was a tad more mature. (She waited TWO minutes to start whining if I was out of her sight.)

You may have noticed that this post is titled Part THREE? If you wanta check out the first two parts, you can find them in the March 2012 posts. Go ahead. Shoo. I'll wait.

Okay, ready to see more pictures of some of our amazingly faithful canine friends? (WARNING: Get your tissue ready.)

History is full of more examples of the fidelity of dogs than of friends. [Alexander Pope}

Until next time, take care of yourselves. And each other. (And give your dog an extra treat.)

  1. Wow, that does bring a tear to the eye. I don't have a dog, but I do have a lovable cat that thinks he is a dog. No kidding. He waits for me by the door when I come home and follows me everywhere. Pets are great companions!

    Great post!

  2. I absolutely love dogs, which makes it all the more baffling as to why I treat them so horribly in my novel. They're vicious feral predators in my novels and my main character despises them. Weird.

    Have a great weekend.

  3. Awww. You made me cry. And miss my dogs. But I'll forgive you, because the memories are good ones. :)

  4. Dogs don't judge...they only love! Great post!!

  5. Jeremy- We used to have a cat who thought he was a dog, too. He was just a kitten when we got him, and he was raised with our dog. They were the best of pals, and would sit, side-by-side, begging for treats. Glad you liked the post, and thanks for stopping by.

L.G.- It is a little peculiar that the dogs in your book aren't based on dogs you've actually known and loved. Then again, a vicious feral predator makes for more exciting reading than a cuddly pooch licking your cheek, eh? Hope you have a super weekend.

Linda- As long as the memories are good.

DL- You're right. Maybe that's why we love them so much. Thanks.

  6. Gosh, those were a little hard to look at. Bolstering, but difficult.

    Have a great weekend, Sus.

  7. Those photos of the dogs beside the bodies and graves of their favorite human ... really heart-rending. :(

Now I'm missing my dog. Heading home from a 5 day vacation in the Poconos and can't wait to pick her up from doggy daycare.

  8. Suze- Sorry. Forget the difficult, and hang onto the "bolstering" part. Hope you have a great weekend, too.

Dianne- I hope you had an awesome time in the Poconos. Bet it was a lot cooler there than it's been over most of the country. I remember swimming in a spring-fed pool in the Poconos many years ago. I looked like a Smurf. Have a super weekend. (Give Sasha an extra treat.)

  9. This is UNFAIR. I've now got a tear-stained keyboard (well almost, anyway).

  10. Boy, you weren't kidding when you said "get your tissue ready"! Animals are on my list of things I am most grateful for.

We live in an apartment, so we have cats instead of dogs, but they have all been just as much part of our family and don't they know it!

    Lovely post, Susan!

  11. IK- Me, too. Now that our children are out and about and raising families of their own, our cats have become our spoiled "little girls".

  12. Don't exist without my boys. That simple.

    Love,

  13. Cry, no I don't cry at sad dog stories or pictures. I blubber disgustingly, needing at least half a box of tissues just for my nose.

Have you ever seen My Dog Skip - now that is a full box movie and don't get me started on Hachi, A Dog's Tale. Better every human die in a movie, just let the dog live.

  14. tomorrow we will have had our rescue dog 2 weeks...spoiled rotten already and trained us completly just the way he wants. my son says, but he really does give us those puppy eyes...

  15. Janie- I know whatcha mean.

Arleen- Yeah, me too. "Old Yeller" still brings me to my knees.

Annmarie- Rescue animals are the BEST, but sometimes it's a real toss-up as to whether we rescue them or it's the other way around.

  16. That got me a bit choked up.

We've had Labs. They've always amazed me. They would have died for our kids.

  17. Thanks for becoming a follower of my blog. It says here I already am following yours. The picture of the German Shepherd by the grave just got to me. I lost my German Shepherd, Angel, in May this year and she would have done the same, had it been me. And it is so true you can't find any better friends than your dogs.

  18. aw, dammit, now I have to go give mine a tummy rub, maybe even let him lick me - but not on the lips! I know where that tongue has been!

  19. Connie- I've never had a Lab, but have always heard that they're a particularly protective and loyal breed.

Inger- So sorry about you losing your German shepherd. Sounds like she was well-named. I thought I was already following you, too, but when I tried to "sign in" on your blog to check, it kicked me over to the screen to sign on as a follower. So, maybe I'm a two-timer. Wait... that doesn't sound quite right ...

Marcy- HA! I know what you mean.

  20. Sob. Makes me think of that cute little pooch in There's Something About Mary.

  21. Dogs are proof that gods love us. "If there are no dogs in Heaven, then when I die I want to go where they went," said Will Rogers. I agree.

  22. Got a big lump in my throat. Those photos are lovely. And I love that Will Rogers' quote too. I hope I see my dog Lady when I get (hopefully) to heaven.

  23. Mr. C- HA! Makes me think of a lot of dogs, but that dog ain't one of 'em!

Laura- Well said. (Only I hope the fleas don't go there with them.)

Liz- I hope you do, too.

  24. Evalina- Me, too. They have an inimitable way of adding warmth and joy into our lives. Thanks for stopping by.
