What Goes Around

Thought for the Day:  I saw that. [Karma]

We're all works in progress, which means even though we may strive to be kinder and more forgiving, there's a slim possibility we might also possibly smirk a teensy bit when we see the jackass who's been honking his horn and flipping off everyone as he weaves through traffic at a rate just under the speed of light sitting at the side of the road in front of the flashing blue lights of a police car. Not that we wish any real harm to the guy, mind you. But he DID have it coming...

While it isn't a good idea or very nice to exact revenge on other people, I think most of us derive a certain amount of satisfaction when the bad guys get caught, the cheaters get dumped, and the one who broke your heart gets his broken into pieces. (♪♫ and that's when you'll discover that revenge is sweet, when I sit there applauding from a front row seat...♫ ♪)

Today's post is loosely based on a story someone told me years ago...

After gal pals Martha and Mary spent hours on end shopping, they decided to go to a nearby cafeteria for a much-needed rest and a bite to eat.

In the parking lot outside the restaurant, they spotted a dead rat lying on the ground.

"Poor thing," Martha said. "We can't just leave him there. What should we do?"

"I know!" Mary said. She pulled one of her bags from the trunk and emptied its contents into another bag. Then she carefully wrapped the rat in tissue paper and lowered him gently into the empty bag. "I'll bury him when I get home."

It was a very hot day, and the ladies didn't want to stink up the car by putting the burial bag into the trunk, so they decided to let it air out on top of the car while they went into the restaurant.

From their window-side table, they watched a well-dressed woman stroll nonchalantly past the car while obviously checking out the bag. Then she doubled back, snatched the bag and kept on walking.

"Did you SEE that? What nerve!" Martha said, shaking her head.

Mary laughed. "Yeah, but just wait until she opens that bag!"

The ladies were still laughing (Wouldn't YOU?) when our self-satisfied thief ambled into the restaurant with the bag still firmly gripped in her hand. After she went through the line, she settled at a nearby table, put the bag on an empty chair and began to eat. She took a few bites of her food and then casually lifted the bag into her lap to check out her treasure. From a few tables away, Martha and Mary could barely contain themselves as she pulled out the tissue paper and happily peered into the bag with a look of great anticipation on her face.

Her eyebrows raised, her eyes opened wide, and she made a sound somewhere between a blood-curdling scream and a fish-out-of-water gasp. The bag slid from her lap and she sank to the floor, wheezing and clutching her chest. A cafeteria worker sent the busboy to call 911, while she helpfully administered an unneeded, but highly energetic, Heimlich maneuver on the horrified woman.

The ambulance arrived, and despite her protests, the hapless rat burglar was strapped to a gurney and rolled out the door.... with the bag, which one of the EMTs so kindly picked up when he gathered her belongings, perched on her stomach.

Until next time, take care of yourselves. And each other.

    1. HA! Me, too. It reminds me of what I heard years ago. During a New York City sanitation workers' strike, a clever doctor I knew wrapped his garbage and left it in his unlocked car. Yep. Somebody stole it. :)

  2. What a fun story! I would like to say that I know a few people who need something like that to happen to them, but then my karma would be endangered and get black edges! Thanks for the early morning laugh to start my day! Hugs, Valerie

    1. HA! Yeah, we've got to be careful when it comes to "wishing" bad karma on somebody else. Best to let the universe do its thing. I'm glad to give you a laugh. :)

  3. Hah! That's epic! She'll probably think twice before trying to steal something again... XD

  4. Smiling all over my face here. Which may be wrong but is totally human.
And how I love that karma didn't take her own sweet time - as she so often does.

  5. Hi Susan - ah well I'm glad the thief got her cumeuppance ... I had a horrid thought that the rat was in the boot, and the thief had their expensive shopping! Fun - thanks for making my Friday happy .. cheers Hilary

  6. lmao whoopsy, She'll always look before she steals now lol Not that I believe in karma persee, but I enjoy it when some get what they have coming. I'm not above giving some a nudge either, to the few that really tick me off. What? Not like I nudge them off a bridge lol

    1. HA! You're probably right. I'd thought maybe it would cure her of stealing altogether, but she's more likely to just be more careful about it next time.

Of course not. Not in real life, anyway. You can always push your characters off that ledge... or into a pit. (But only if they deserve it...)

  7. That is hysterical! Some people get what they deserve :-)

  8. We all love Karma and only wish that we can be around to witness it. That is such a joy. Is it unkind, well maybe, is It wrong, hell no! We all deserve some satisfaction in life.

    1. Ab-so-doggone-lutely! It IS satisfying when the bad guy "gets his." I read a book years ago, and it is the ONLY book I have EVER tossed into the garbage. (I know... sacrilege!) But an absolutely vile character did absolutely vile things throughout the book, and I only kept reading because I was waiting for him to get caught. He never did. He got away with everything. I HATED that! I want the good guys to win and the bad guys to get caught, doggone it!

  9. Well, wouldn't want to cause that kind of harm, but admit I would've been under the table laughing.

    1. Throwing a dead rat at someone would be causing the harm, but having a thief steal a dead rat? Whole different story. I would've been laughing, for sure. :)

  11. Oh my gosh Susan, I would have busted a gut over that one, That serves her right for taking the bag in the first place and I am sure nothing was wrong with her that a few deep breaths wouldn't have fixed...deep breaths away from the rat that is. ;-)

    1. Yeah, deep breaths away from the rat. Too bad it was sitting on her belly... HA!

  16. If only one were able to order Karma online or over the phone! Wouldn't that be great? Both of these stories are SO satisfying. I have experienced something similar to the "flashing blue light" incident. It made my day.....

  19. Funny story! I saw Karma at work once. It was night and I was in the left lane getting ready to turn left when a car came around my left side and passed me. I stopped in time and cursed at the driver, only to hear a siren and see flashing red lights behind me. A cop had seen the whole thing and pulled that creep over! Yay!!!

    1. That is absolutely priceless. It's always extra cool when a police car is there to see jerky drivers like that in action. :)

  22. Greetings Susan. An amusing post that I enjoyed reading. I have a friend who strongly believes in Karma, and is always pointing out when people he doesn't like, or get on with, are suffering that it is Karma come to pay them a visit! I'm guilty of sometimes smiling at some peoples' misfortunes - but only when I think they've deserved it! Blessings to you.

Thank you. Love love, Andrew. Bye.

    1. Greetings back atcha, Andrew. Whether or not we expressly believe in the concept of karma or not, it's reassuring to believe the bad guys and meanies will "get theirs" in the end. :)

  24. Karma can bite. Very funny. And yes, I get annoyed at the cops hanging out on "My" road. But I do feel joy when they nab someone who had just whipped by me acting superior on the road. Ha!
Have a good weekend. A tad nippy here

    1. Yep, karma can definitely bite. Oh yeah... it's that superior attitude, that "above the law" behavior than makes it extra sweet when one of those buttheads gets pulled over by the police.

It's a tad nippy here, too. My brother just came in from Texas, so maybe he brought it with him. :)

Karma is like a rubber band. You can only stretch it so far before it comes back and smacks you in the face.

  26. Hilarious story - and you REALLY had me laughing when they were rolling the woman out on a gurney with the bagged rat on her stomach!!
Revenge is sweet - especially if it's vicious (unfortunately, I inherited that attitude from my father....)

  27. Was that good karma for the rat, I wonder, in its next incarnation?
I think I'm okay for laughing!
The correct prayer for comeuppance is 'may they receive the lessons they need' I believe, which means the sayer need not be wishing harm, it's the obnoxious person's behaviour that brings that, haha :-)

    1. Hmmm, I dunno. Does karma work for rats, too? (The four-legged ones, I mean...)

That prayer is absolutely PERFECT. I'm officially adopting it. Thanks!

  33. Hi Susan! I LOVED reading about the "rat burglar!" There are definitely a few people that I would enjoy setting the trap for, but I would never feel enough sympathy for a rat to go anywhere near it in the first place. As always, thanks for the laughs!

    1. Hi-ya, Julie! Good to hear from you. As far as the rat goes, I'll tell you a secret. The original story was about a cat, but I figured a dead rat would evoke more of a humorous response than a poor little dead kitty. Lots of us have cats, but I doubt if many have a pet rat. :)
