Alternative Solutions

Thought for the day: Who indeed will set bounds to human ingenuity? Who will assert that everything in the universe capable of being perceived is already discovered and known? [Galileo]

One could argue that there is a best way to do something, but that doesn't mean it's the only way. Give ten different people the same challenge, and they're likely to come up with ten different potential solutions. (Which is why some business meetings are less than productive...)

Let's just say... some people are more creative than others. They've got more ingenuity and imagination.

Creativity is intelligence having fun. [Albert Einstein]

I reckon one way... and the safest way... to skin a cat is to buy one that doesn't have any fur to begin with.  Having a naked cat would be easier on the ol' vacuum cleaner, but... um... yuk. Sorry. Not too many things creep me out, but they do.

But I digress. This post isn't about cats, hairless or not. It's about human ingenuity. I believe the following pictures will demonstrate that trait quite well, but I'll leave it to you to decide whether or not the people who obviously had a ton of fun coming up with these solutions demonstrated intelligence or not... (I'll let the pictures speak for themselves.)

At the heart of science is an essential balance between two seemingly contradictory attitudes— an openness to new ideas, no matter how bizarre or counter-intuitive they may be, and the most ruthless skeptical scrutiny of all ideas, old and new. This is how deep truths are winnowed from deep nonsense. [Carl Sagan]

Okay, so some of those pics demonstrate some very clever solutions, and others? Okay, nonsense. But funny.

Never ever underestimate the importance of having fun. [Randy Pausch]

Until next time, take care of yourselves. And each other.

Sometimes, you've gotta think outside the... box.

I hope that you and Smarticus are doing well.

    1. Agreed. There's no such thing as "too much" fun.

Thanks. We're hanging in there. Hugs back atcha.

  2. Some inventions might have been better not made at all, but I suppose it's better to tr than not! Have a creative and hopefully fun weekend, take care of yourself and Smarticus. Hugs, Valerie

    1. You're right. There are definitely some inventions we could've done without... like the electric fork. Well, yeah, it IS a gag gift, but the idea still cracks me up.

You have a super weekend, too. Hugs back atcha.

  3. These photos are tangible evidence that creativity can be funny and scary as hell all at the same time.
The very last picture, "Ingenuity", is my favorite - because that's exactly what I'd do.

BTW - I'd rather clean up cat fur than have a naked feline...

Take care, I hope you and hubby are doing okay.

    1. Yep, some kinds of creativity definitely need to be stifled. (Especially the creative demonstrations that are prefaced by, "Hold my beer, and watch this!")

That's exactly what Smarticus would do, too. Maybe most men. After all, when ya have one of those "handy gadgets to take along on a picnic," that's a viable option. (In case you didn't catch the reference, it's from an old joke about a little girl and little boy who are on a church picnic. That's what she says when he "does his thing.")

You and me both! Around here, cat fur is a fashion statement.

      Thanks. You, too.

    3. Right, Hilary. We'd at least require a bush or dumpster to hide behind. :)

Clever to use the clips to hold cords though!

    2. I thought the use of those clips was the most clever example, too.

Yes. Cats definitely need hair. Naked cats are about as "huggable" as snakes.

Have a super weekend - Go Chiefs!

    1. Of course. Duct tape is a necessity. Same with WD-40. "If it moves and it shouldn't, use duct tape; if it doesn't move and it should, use WD-40."

You have a super weekend, too. I don't care which team wins. I lost interest when the Falcons imploded. (again!) But... the Superbowl gives us a great excuse to get some foot-longs from Subway. HA. Oh, what the heck... go Niners! (Their coach used to be with the Falcons... )

    2. Oh, yeah. I forgot about that. If I remember right, I think there was a similar scene in "Benny and Joon."

  8. Have to admit, I had to study a few of these carefully. Wish I'd thought to use binder clips to secure my electronics' cords while I was still working.... that's brilliant! Not so brilliant, I can see my hubby using a bungee cord to hold his trousers. :)

    1. Using clips to secure cords is a pretty darned clever idea, isn't it? The bungee cord cracked me up. My hubby's been wearing suspenders to hold his pants up, but my guess is, if he didn't have any suspenders, he'd be just as happy with a bungee cord. :)

  9. I could have used a little ingenuity trying to post my bio on Smashwords. I've done it over 6 times, the only time it took was the 5th when I wrote it in an angry I don't give a sh.. attitude. That was at midnight last night. so this morning I try again, managed to delete the bad bio, wrote a new one, hit save. Gone, nothing, again. And guess what, it's the 6th time I didn't save a copy. Boy am I dumb or what. DON'T answer that. LOL
    Have a great weekend!

  10. I love bizarre inventions and wonder where they come from. Sometimes they are a results of trying to invent something else and were “mistakes”, like penicillin and post-it notes.

Then there was the Whoopie Cushion, a truly marvelous invention, probably the best ever made to give us a smile.

Enjoy the game. I don’t care about who wins or loses but friends who do care are coming over and we will all have a good time no matter the results.

    1. HA! I think whoopie cushions are hilarious. Even better yet? The Minions' fart machine. It even has a built-in timer, so it can "go off" next to someone and really catch 'em by surprise. (I know that first hand. Our grandsons LOVE to do that to me.)

I dunno if we'll even watch the game. Like you, we don't care which team wins. No Falcons playing? Not interested. HA We'll probably have it on in the background while we're shooting pool. On mute...

    2. Did indeedido meet a hairless cat and a hairless dog, friend Sue. One of my nurse friend has a hairless cat … ugly as heck … the cat!!!:) … but very lovable. Hairless dog I saw in PV, Mexico, and listened patiently for about an hour in +30C weather to his Mrs Ownwer Lady explaining about pros and cons of this particular also very lovable breed. c.

    3. I can't say I'd never get attached to a hairless cat, because I've never actually been up-close and personal with one. I guess if I could get attached to a rat, anything is possible... :)

I suppose some Chihuahuas have such short hair, they kinda LOOK naked...

  14. I don't like hairless cats either. I think if I was THAT worried about cat hair, I wouldn't have a cat at all. I see a few disasters waiting to happen there, but the paper clips cord holder is a pretty good idea.

    1. I guess some people are so allergic to dander, a hairless cat is their best choice, but I'd rather sneeze, or as you say, do without altogether.

  15. Hi Susan - the road cones with the hosepipe - makes sense (I think!). Some brilliant ideas, some horrific thoughts. My brother years (decades) ago rang me from Cornwall in London and asked how to cook a baked potato in an Aga - he wanted it 'now' ... I had to let him know it'd take an hour+ ... he was not amused ... I still tease him about it. Thank goodness no-one tried to heat pizza on my iron! Great fun thoughts ... and I do hope you're both holding up - cheers Hilary

    1. Hi-ya, Hilary. Sounds like your brother needed a microwave oven, huh? That's about the closest you can get to having a "now" baked potato. :)

We're doing fine. I hope you are, too, dear lady. Cheers back atcha.

    1. Hot dogs in the coffee maker does sound a little weird, but no weirder than how we sometimes cooked them in the '70s. We basically electrocuted them in a gizmo called the Hot Dogger.

  18. I wouldn't dream of doing it. Putting the hot dog in the coffee maker. I once tried heating milk in the hot water jug and couldn't get rid of the smell!

  20. Some of those pictures are downright scary. I wonder if the electrical outlet would only be understood by Brits? I've lived with Canadian plugs & sockets for so long now it took me a while to remember that British plugs can be dismantled and that's where the fuse goes.

    ReplyDelete

    1. They are, aren't they? I must admit, the electrical outlet looks rather foreign to ME... but now I know for sure. The one thing I DID know about it is that jamming those scissors into it was NOT a brilliant idea.

  22. I did the coffee pot one. I was at a book event by myself. There were no restaurants near the hotel and I didn't want to waste time driving somewhere and didn't want to order a whole pizza just for me, so I got a can of stew at a 7-11, thinking there would be a microwave in the room. There wasn't, so I put in in the coffee pot and heated it up and then ate it with coffee stirrers like chopsticks.

That left me extra time to write in a quiet hotel all evening.

So far, so good! It actually SNOWED here today!!! Big beautiful fat flakes. It was beautiful to see, and it was coming down fast enough to accumulate an inch or two within a few hours. Now? It's quickly melting... and temperatures are supposed to be back in the sixties in a few days. I hope you're having a super weekend, too.
