When One Equals Five Hundred and Seventy-Four

Thought for the day:  A Healthy attitude is contagious, but don't wait to catch it from somebody else. Be a carrier.

image: morguefile

One of the nice things about smiling is... it's free. It doesn't cost a single cent to have a positive attitude, and for the most part, it really is contagious. Try being extra nice to the cashier and bagger at the grocery story, and see how much it's appreciated. Smile and say something nice to the people you meet while waiting in some infernal line, and see how quickly they respond. I think most people would genuinely like to feel connected to other people, but for whatever reason, they hold back. No reason you have to. Go ahead and try to build a bridge, no matter how small it is. What do you have to lose?

So, what's that have to do with the title of this post? Not a darned thing.

What the title's referring to is that this, my 574th post, is actually a lazy-assed re-run of my very first one, originally published on February 25, 2011. Since the IWSG posts will be coming out on Tuesday instead of Wednesday next week, whatever I post today will only be (ahem) new for a few days, so rather than spend all day writing a new post that's doomed to die an early death out of the kindness of my heart, I'm gonna re-share this oldie, but not so goodie.

Remember how scary it was when you dipped your toes into the Blogosphere for the first time? How would anyone find you...? Would anyone ever leave a comment...? Well, the following post marks my first tentative dip, and I've gotta say, it's been a pleasure splashing around with you guys. Special thanks to those of you who've shared much of the journey with me, and a warm welcome to those who are just starting to swim in my humble, rather eclectic, pool. I truly cherish our connections.

Thought for the dayInside of every old person is a young person wondering what happened.

Yay, me. Finally got the gumption to jump into the blogosphere, proving that it IS possible to teach an old dog new tricks. Guess I'll be typing to myself for quite a while, but I sure am looking forward to that glorious sun-drenched day when something other than a sad little goose egg shows up under comments.

In the meantime, I'll entertain myself until you guys join the party.

My name is Susan, and I'm an amateur radio operator. Sounds like a greeting at one of those "addictions anonymous" kinda meetings, doesn't it? Funny you should mention it, because the wife of a ham I know claims that ham radio isn't a hobby...  it's a disease. Addiction, disease. You say tomato, I say to-mah-to.

Okay, so I admit it. Many a ham radio operator has deserted his warm bed in the middle of the night to tiptoe into his shack and fire up the radio. After all, how can he possibly sleep when there might be a pipeline opening to Mongolia, or to some other remote part of the world? And, yeah, a ham might miss a party or wedding every now and then. But only if it conflicts with a worldwide contest, hamfest, or with that once-a-year all-important field day. (He usually makes it to his OWN wedding.)

Writing is the same way. Countless writers crawl out of bed in the wee hours of the morning, because that's when their inconsiderate muses decide to tap them on the shoulder. The words start rolling around in their heads, the voices start talking, and they have no choice but to grab a pad or fire up the computer. It's a passion, and a compulsion. Writers don't always write because they want to write; they write because they HAVE to write. There's simply no peace to be found until they put form to the words churning in their heads.

But it's all good, because it's all about passion, and passion, my friends, keeps the giddyap in our steps.

How about you? What lights a fire in your furnace? Whatever it is, I sincerely hope your significant other shares that passion with you, because that elevates the enjoyment to a whole 'nother level.

And by the way, if you're interested in learning more about amateur radio, check out http://www.arrl.org/  It doesn't matter how old you are, where you live, or what you do in life. Amateur radio is FUN, and offers many opportunities to serve your communities.

No trees were killed in the sending of this message. However, a large number of electrons were terribly inconvenienced.

Believe it or not, that first sorry post actually garnered a couple of comments. Surprised the heck out of me! Just like you guys do with every one of your funny, entertaining, intelligent posts.

Until next time, take care of yourselves. And each other.

  1. Great idea to reprint your first post. Your blog is doing well now, that's great. A positive attitude is so important. Have a wonderful weekend, hugs, Valerie

    1. Thanks. I dunno if it was a "great" idea, but it was a lot easier than coming up with a new post topic for today. :)

Yes, attitude is everything. It isn't always easy to remain positive, but it beats walking around in a cloud of gloom and doom.

You have a wonderful weekend, too. Hugs back atcha.

  2. I am so grateful that I finally got the courage to dip my toes into the blogosphere, and finally to take the plunge. I have laughed with other bloggers, I have wept with and for them. And I have learned. So much.
Love your first post, and am so grateful our electrons crossed here.

I'm glad our electrons crossed, too. :)

  3. I'm thankful I finally jumped in with both feet too, after several bloggers told me my comments were worth a blog of their own. I do seem to have run out of steam these days (the River runs dry, ha ha), so maybe I should be one of the ones jumping out of bed in the middle of the night and writing down those words and conversations churning through my brain.

  4. Dear Susan, thanks for revisiting this wonderful post. I have a great affection for the resurgence of writing without the pressures of submitting to an editor --although I did that too as the "inconsiderate muses" tapped my shoulder. In the '70s I had time only to scribble poems and read at art galleries, bars, and (my favorite in this city) The Shire Road Pub. Those were monthly things, group things where people could bring their skills and ears, drink good beer and listen to the poetry of their city. Kids came in their pajamas to hear their parents declaim, recite etc. I had 2 plays produced locally in my teens, but that was different --the immediacy was not there --except for my Mama who stood up during applause and yelled, "Author!!! Author!!!" Things got and stayed busy and when Blogger came out, the wonderful feeling of community --expanded to include the best planet in the world-- returned. I sure like this post, Susan, where the new renaissance begins.

    1. Dear Geo,

You've been tipping your toes into the writing world for a long time now, and it sounds like a glorious journey. I LOVE that your mom stood up and yelled, "Author! Author!" for you. Something tells me I would've loved her, too.

Dude, I am truly happy that you've abandoned the stress of pleasing those pesky editors to embrace the less-stress joys of entertaining your many friends and admirers within the blogosphere. Without a doubt, your voice is one of the most unique ones around.

It is funny, isn't it, how we can type quietly in a quiet place and someone faraway can hear us.

Yeah, it truly is amazing. Atmospheric conditions don't always provide favorable conditions for radio communications, but blogging gives us a whole different way to release our voice into the ether. And to be heard! (I see you, too...) :)

  6. I still cringe a bit at my first posts, but you get there. Ugg to the muse wanting to write early, sometimes I tell it to giddyup and get lost for a few more hours haha blogging is a great place indeed.

HA! Yeah, I try rolling over and telling my muse to giddyup, too but she's a stubborn cuss.

  7. Your first post was a lot better than mine. I see that you've kept your sense of humor all these years.
My brain doesn't work at night, so I'll admit I've never gotten out of bed to go right. I must have a sleepy muse.

  10. A big ***SMILE*** from me to you! Congrats on sticking with blogging and sharing what you do. I started as a way in keeping in touch with family and was actually amazed when I received comments from others. Thankfully I've become friends with many who are not family and who I will probably never see in person. Comments always make me SMILE!

    1. And a big ***SMILE*** right back to you!

I started blogging because some editors and literary agents told me I had to build a "platform." That's long since fallen by the wayside as my incentive. Platform, shplatform... I've enjoy getting to know so many wonderful PEOPLE.

  11. Oh my goodness, but this post speaks to me. (Roars, actually.) My early blog days were, in a word, pathetic … I'd little idea what I was doing. I left comments here and there, hoping to solicit friends. Weeks passed before someone charitably left a comment.... you'd have thought I won the Publishers Clearing House. Wouldn't it be wonderful if there was a 'welcome-to-blogland' site where newbies could visit and make themselves known? Sad to think some may grow discouraged and give up, you know?

PS - I'm going to check out that amateur radio link! We've each our own hobbies, but nothing in common. Who knows?

YES, it would be wonderful if there were a "Welcome to Blogland" site, and I nominate... YOU!... to start one! :)

Super. If you have any questions about amateur radio, I'd be happy to help. Nowadays, you don't even have to learn Morse code to get a license. :)

  13. Oh, how fun! I remember being so afraid to hit "publish" when I wrote my first post. I started right at the end of 2010 so our blogs are about the same age! This post reminds me of your amateur radio A-Z which was such fun. Without those A-Z Challenges I doubt I ever would have found my way in blog land.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yeah, that first time really was scary, wasn't it? I don't know which I was more concerned about... whether no one would ever comment.. or whether someone would!

Thanks! That was the only A-Z challenge I've ever participated in, and it was a lot of fun. (Gee, I wonder if I could get away with doing a new A-Z using the OLD posts... HA!)

  14. Hi Susan - well that set the tone of your blog for the coming years ... and it ain't stopped yet - sincerely hope it doesn't.

It's great to be part of this group - whether there are other groups like this in the big bad world I've no idea ... but boy is it fun. Certainly the A-Z, as Julie mentions, really did set us all as cats amongst the blogging kittens ... we just mucked along just fine and continue to do so - but what a great post - cheers Hilary

Oh and then I must go back and read your A-Zs ... hadn't realised, I don't think, or taken in with the ham radio aspect - maybe we met at the end ... or later ... or who knows - as it's us ... it could have been in the age of the dinosaurs?! Happy weekend - cheers Hilary

    1. Hi-ya, Hilary. Thanks. I don't plan to stop any time soon. I hope you don't, either.

I did the A-Z on amateur radio in 2012. I don't remember if we met then or not... but I'm thinking maybe we did. Gee, I really don't think it was in the time of dinosaurs... maybe the Dark Ages, though... :)

Happy weekend to you, too. Cheers!

  15. Since moving to Canada I've been back to Britain twice. Both times I missed the smiles and willingness to engage that characterizes everyday life here. It just doesn't happen there, but I didn't know what was missing until I moved.

If you've always been interested in ham radio, it isn't too late to follow through! Some years ago, we administered the entry level test to a fella who'd wanted to get his license all his life. He passed it, too... at 86 years of age. We were all so proud of him for finally following his dream!

      Cheers back atcha.

I have lived in Canada for 35 years and encountered both smiles and tears … personally and professionally … the last 2 almost unstoppable tears sessions happened for me were when my baby daughter died some 30 years ago and when my other daughter turned transgender/ rainbow some 5 years ago … but the comforting and smiling sessions are ongoing here in Canada … smiles … friend Sue … Love, cat.

The fact that she's tough enough to make this difficult decision tells me she isn't as shell-less as you worry she might me. You've raised your younguns to be tough and independent.

A big smile and hug from me to you, dear cat.
